This group consists of the Order Esociformes, which includes the both the Pikes (Esocidae) and the Mudminnows (Umbridae). The Pikes are a group of elongated, torpedo-like predatory fishes, with large mouths and sharp teeth. Their coloration is typically greenish and they may be spotted, stiped, or silvery. Individual pike marking patterns are unique, like fingerprints. The mudminnows are very similar but usually smaller and with smaller teeth. There are five species of pike and five species of mudminnow in the Order Esociformes.
